Solar
lentigo / Sun spots / Senile Spots
Solar
lentigo a.k.a sun spots or senile spots are small, pigmented flat or
slight raised spots with clearly defined margin that is surround by
normal appearing skin. Usually solar lentigo evolve slowly over
years, in some cases they may appear suddenly. It can occur anywhere
on the body and the colour varies from light brown to black.
Lentigines are benign in most of the cases, however they must be
carefully examined to differentiate from early pigmented skin cancers
such as melanoma.
Solar
lentigo can be removed by varies method, such as chemical peels, IPL
( intense pulse light ) and Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers. Among all the
treatments, Q-switched Nd: YAG appeared to be one of the safest and
most efficient treatment available with no side effects and minimal
downtime. It only requires 1 treatment session to appreciate obvious
result.
In
order to prevent further recurrence of solar lentigines, a
broad-spectrum sunscreen can be used to prevent further appearance
and darkening of solar lentigines. Several topical cream may also
lighten lentigines if applied for a number of months.
