What Causes Aging?

“We get old too soon and wise too late” – Benjamin Franklin once make such statement which can clearly reflects to many individuals these days for with a little wisdom on how to take care of yourself may keep you from aging before your time!

  1. Free Radical
    • Like how a metal become rusted, or oxidized, an unstable molecule can target and attack our cells in our body to the depth of DNA causing cells damage which is believe one of the many causes of various diseases and of course aging!
  2. Inflammation
    • Once which is believed to be one of process of a healthy immune system is now being pin point and consider one of the major player for causing various diseases and promoting aging at the same time. Of course we are not talking about an acute inflammation but instead a long standing one or otherwise being defined as an chronic inflammation.
  3. Glycation
    • Basically too much sugar can promote aging. Sugar can mix with protein and fats leading to Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are able to accelerate the aging process by churning out free radicals and promoting inflammation.
  4. Stress
    • Here we are taking stress seriously pin pointing out the stress hormone in our body which actually increase our pulse rate and blood pressure which can also promote chronic inflammation and even worse affect our brain tissue at the hippocampus affecting our long term memory functions.

So since now that you understand the process of aging and the reaction in our body that actually promote aging then I guess delaying aging is not that hard isn’t it? All you have to do is
  • Put yourself up on an anti-oxidant diet
  • Don’t forget the anti-inflammatory diet
  • Eat less sugar

  • Rest and exercise more

Yes indeed you could, there are many books or articles in the internet these days which will be able to teach you what antioxidant or anti-inflammatory food or supplement to eat to stay younger and healthier.. That is if you already knew these earlier and had been keeping yourself healthy with all these knowledge.

How about those who already gone through all the aging process leading to various tissues damage in the body and only get to know all these now? Is it too late for them? Of course not, other than all these ‘keeping yourself healthy’ knowledge, you should know keep yourself updated of the recent Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) as well!

Mesenchymal Stem Cells

This is a multipotent stromal cells that is able to differentiate into various cell types. In other word, it is a very primitive cell that has the capability to differentiate in any other cells to help in tissue repair and regeneration. With this it is possible to repair or regenerate any tissue which is already being damage or severe due to the process of aging.

Arm Pit Odour (Fox smell)

“Throw your hands in the sky, wave ‘em side to side…”
Some of us can’t dance to that song.
Some of us…can’t wear nice sleeveless tops on our date nights, parties.
Some of us…don’t have friends.

Why? We’re not ugly. We’re just ‘foxy’. Not the sexy meaning of foxy, it’s on the contrary…the foxy smelly odour kind of foxy. People are afraid to be in close proximity with us, because we smell bad.

We can’t raise our arms in public, because people will notice our soaked wet armpits no matter how much deodorant or antiperspirant powder and creams we apply. And no matter how we shave, pluck, wax……the hair….just keep on coming back growing faster than grass. People always say the more the better, the more the merrier. But more sweat and more hair is definitely far more troublesome. Is there anything that can be done to save us from all these nightmares?

Of course there is !

Hyperhidrosis is characterized by abnormally increased sweating or perspiration. It is usually localized to specific parts of the body i.e. hands, feet, armpits, and the groin area, due to the relatively high concentration of sweat glands.

Botulinum Toxin Type A (BTA) is an approved treatment for severe and persistent primary hyperhidrosis of the axilla that interferes with the activities of daily living and that is resistant to topical treatment. After treatment, clinical improvement usually develops within a week after the injection. Clinical studies and researches have shown that treating excessive sweating of the armpits, hands, feet, and face with BTA is safe and effective.

Also, the newest generation of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems – LightPro, produces a precise beam of light energy, which safely transmits through the skin, selectively targets pigment in hair the follicles. When this light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicle of the hair, it converts to heat, which in turn causes thermal damage to the follicle and permanently destroys the hair while leaving our skin intact. The heat also disables the cells responsible for new hair growth.

Basically anyone can be treated with BTA and IPL. Treatments are customized according to your skin type and treatment area. Moreover, IPL treatments are effective on all skin types and any body parts including armpits, legs, back, face, neck, bikini line etc can all be treated.

So now, say BYEBYE to hairy foxy armpits … and HELLO to smooth odorless armpits!!!

Myths about cellulite!

Many women have cellulite, and a lot of them will treat it as an aesthetic problem, but not a medical condition, because cellulite is a normal phenomenon in human. There are several myths and facts of cellulite that I would like to share with the readers of Ido’s clinic.

Myth 1 : Cellulite is caused by excessive fat
Cellulite refers to the skin appearance which turns puckered and dimpled because of disruption of skin structures. Fat tissues are lying in between the skin and muscle layers. Fibrous septa, which is part of the connective tissues, wraps around the fat tissues. Risk factors such as age, genetics, weight change, stress and poor lymphatic drainage can weaken the connective tissues and irregular fat cells protrude through the skin, making the skin tether to the underlying muscles, giving the skin a puckering and dimpling look.

Myth 2 : Cellulite only affects women / obese people
Cellulite affects both men and women, although it is more obvious in women compared to men due to various factors such as female hormone (estrogen) and differences in fat, connective tissues and muscle distribution. Cellulite may be more visible in obese person but it also occurs in thin, young, athletic persons, and even those who have normal body weight.

Myth 3 : Cellulite can be done away by weight loss
As cellulite is not caused by excessive fat tissues, weight loss will not be able to remove skin dimples. In fact, building of muscle tone helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Strength training of the cellulite-affected areas like thighs, buttocks, hips, arms and abdomen works too.

Myth 4 : Drinking plenty of water can reduce appearance of cellulite
Although some studies suggest the culprit of cellulite could be the accumulation of toxin in the body tissues, there is no scientific evidence that drinking plenty of water can reduce the unsightly appearance.

Treatments of cellulite
Radiofrequency (RF) : RF is a promising technology for non- surgical body contouring, as well as fat and cellulite reduction. It generates heat, which helps in tightening the skin by stimulating collagen remodeling. It also improves the removal of fat cells via lymphatic drainage. Thus, reducing the appearance of cellulite.

Mesotherapy : This involves the Injection of microscopic quantities of natural plant extracts, vitamin and caffeine into the specific areas of the body where the excessive fat is stored. The broken-down fat will then be flushed out of the body. Mesotherapy is used as an assisting therapy to treat cellulite.

Liposuction : Some people turn to liposuction as the treatment of cellulite. Liposuction only helps to remove the fats but is unable to reverse the pucker and dimple skin. In some cases, liposuction worsens the condition as the skin becomes looser after the procedure. However, the new technology of laser assisted liposuction is able to destroy the fats cells, while tightening the skin at the same time.

Massage with topical creams: Vigorous massage may help in improving blood circulation, reducing the toxin level in the body and reducing excessive fluid in the cellulite-prone areas. In addition to massage, effective topical cream can also be used to ameliorate the condition. However, the result does not last long.

Wearing bikini again !

Stretch marks or striae are a common problem for most of the people especially women after giving birth. Not only have they often shied away from their out-of-shape body, the unsightly stretch marks refrain them from wearing bikini again!

Epidermal and dermal layers are intact and in continuity in normal skin. Unfortunately, a sudden rapid growth or weight gain that overstretches the skin layers making the skin has no time to adapt for the change. Subsequently the affected area loses its resilience followed by a breakage within it.

The area will then appear to be empty and soft to touch. Besides, hormone plays its part too. Glucocorticoid hormone which prevents the fibroblasts from laying down the collagen and elastin fibers is responsible for stretch marks development in most of the cases of pregnancy and some systemic disorders.

Stretch marks can appear as white, purple or brown color in anywhere on body especially those areas where large amount of fat can be found namely abdomen, inner and outer thighs, buttock, arms and breasts.

There are several treatment options available for stretch marks. Fractional erbium glass laser is one of them. After several times of the stretch marks being zapped by the laser, microscopic wounds start to appear and our body responds to it by creating more collagen and new epithelium. Other than that, PRP and mesotherapy will also help in this case where growth factors are carefully embedded into the area that will then gradually do its wonders by promoting the formation of new firm skin.

Needless to say, the combination of several treatment options is always better than one. The outcome depends on the severity of the problem and frequency of the treatment session. Can’t wait to flaunt your new skin? Take a chance and start making difference today!

Solar lentigo / Sun spots / Senile Spots

Solar lentigo a.k.a sun spots or senile spots are small, pigmented flat or slight raised spots with clearly defined margin that is surround by normal appearing skin. Usually solar lentigo evolve slowly over years, in some cases they may appear suddenly. It can occur anywhere on the body and the colour varies from light brown to black. Lentigines are benign in most of the cases, however they must be carefully examined to differentiate from early pigmented skin cancers such as melanoma.

Solar lentigo can be removed by varies method, such as chemical peels, IPL ( intense pulse light ) and Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers. Among all the treatments, Q-switched Nd: YAG appeared to be one of the safest and most efficient treatment available with no side effects and minimal downtime. It only requires 1 treatment session to appreciate obvious result.

In order to prevent further recurrence of solar lentigines, a broad-spectrum sunscreen can be used to prevent further appearance and darkening of solar lentigines. Several topical cream may also lighten lentigines if applied for a number of months.

Nevus of OTA

What are these? -- Nevi of Ota.

A dark brown, blue or gray patch on the face, which may be congenital or acquired. It is mostly unilateral (90%) which affect the forehead, temple, malar area, or periorbital skin.

Nevus of Ota is very common in Asian populations, and the male-to-female ratio is 1:4.8. It is caused by the entrapment of melanocytes in the upper third of the dermis, involving the distribution of the ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the trigeminal nerve. In some cases, it may also involve the ocular and oral mucosal surfaces.

After onset, nevus of the Ota may enlarge and darken in color and usually remains stable once adulthood is reached. The characteristic of the nevus may fluctuate according to personal and environmental conditions.

Any solution? –YES!
Q switched Nd:YAG laser(Revlite laser treatment), which is unquestionably the current treatment of choice for nevi of Ota with high success rates and minimal adverse effects. It works by destroying the dermal melanocytes selectively without causing harm to the surrounding tissue.

Revlite laser is a quick procedure (10-15 minutes) with only a mild pain. No scabs, hyperpigmentation and down time after the procedure. With a minimum of 6 treatments, skin pigmentation is reduced dramatically with a brightened skin tone.

Revlite Laser can help you

REVLITE is the next generation of Q-switched Nd:YAGlaser technology- a multi-purpose, multi-wavelength aesthetic medical laser that offers maximum power and versatility for a broad range of indications on all skin types.

Revlite utilizes an extremely high speed shutter to produce nanosecond pulse widths, enabling highly effective procedures with less heat and increased safety. Featuring PhotoAcoustic Technology Pulse, the RevLite delivers very narrow pulse widths at peak energy, even at larger spot sizes. The speed and power of RevLite can create a superior PhotoAcoustic rejuvenation effect, including a more refreshed appearance, a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, smoother texture, tightening and decreased pore size.

Skin conditions can be treated by Revlite laser:
  • Birth marks( Nevus of Ota, Café-au-lait, Port-Wine Stains)
  • Acquired pigments(Melasma, Sun Spots, Aging Spots, Horis’s nevus, Freckles)
  • Vascular lesion( Telangiectasia, Spider Nevi)
  • Dermal lesions
  • Tattoo removal
  • Wrinkles reduction
  • Removal of fine hair
  • Acne scar improvement
  • Improvement of oily face
  • Reduction of pore size with smoother texture

During Revlite laser procedure, a special hand piece is passed over the treatment area, dispensing the focused laser energy deep within the targeted tissues in a brief treatment that takes only about 10 to 20 minutes to perform. Facial lines and wrinkles, and discoloration and age damage such as pigment on the face and other areas of the body, are ideally suited for treatment with the Revlite laser procedure. The system is also used to shrink the appearance of large pores, and to improve the texture and tone of skin, resulting in a firmer, smoother, more youthful appearance.

There is minimal downtime associated with the Revlite laser treatment, and most individuals can resume their normal activities right after the procedure. You may experience some slight, temporary redness right after the procedure, which usually disappears within a few hours to a day after treatment. You can expect to see initial results right after treatment, with continued improvements during the weeks following treatment, as new collagen continues to form in the treatment area.

i donn't like its!

Why do I have these dark spots or patches on my face?
What are they?
How do I get rid of them?

Melanocytes are the pigment bearing cells in our skin. The distribution, quantity and activity of melanin pigments determine the different shades of pigmentation appearing on our body. Upon UV stimulation, sun-exposed areas tend to have darker shades of colour as melanin pigments concentrate over the region and become more active. However, some pigmentation problems may be inborn, such as the birth mark, Nevus of Ota.

Commonest pigmentation problems faced by Asian are melasma and freckles. UV has always been blamed for being the main culprit, but at times, hormonal factors, underlying illness and use of certain drugs and chemicals can actually make matter worse.

Sometimes, patients may present with "bleached" patches / spots on their skin. This is termed hypopigmentation, whereby, usually following skin injuries, the melanin pigments are depleted, thus, the skin is 'stripped' of its natural colour.

The approach to the management of all pigmentation problems is to get the appropriate diagnosis, upon which modes of treatment will be discussed with patients.

Several modes of treatment are used to create synergistic effects and to provide clients with the most satisfactory outcomes. For the common problem like melasma and freckes, laser, using the Q-switched Nd-Yag system, combined with topical medications and adequate sun-protection with sunblock are the main stream treatment options.

Eyes are the window to the soul

Double Eyelid

‘Eyes are the window to the soul’ is a common phrase that we always hear, however how do you define an attractive eyes? Although this is a very subjective to discuss but often a beautiful eyes are define as big, sparkling, alert and almost always double eyelid is one of the criteria as definition of attractive eyes. Unfortunately, many Asian are born without double eyelid, and therefore, double eyelid surgery is one of the most popular aesthetic procedures among the Asian population.

Double Eyelid Surgery (Incisional)

Double eyelid surgery is a procedure where excess fat and skin is removed using incisional method and the skin is then sutured back. There will be swelling for about 2 weeks or more, and you need to go back to remove the stitches after about 7-10 days. However not everyone is comfortable to be under the ‘knife’. And besides, many are not able to accept the downtime and swelling. So is there any other way to achieve double eyelid without cutting?

Double Eyelid Procedure (suturing)

For those who are uncomfortable to be under the ‘knife’. There is a method that you can obtain double eyelid without undergoing the incisional method which is what they called the suturing method of double eyelid. This is not a full scale surgery and is considered a simple procedure. However by saying simple, this procedure should be only performed by well-trained doctor and not any other layman.

This is not the latest method as it was even documented as early as 1896 by Dr. Mikamo (Japan). So what is the differences between and incisional and the suturing method. The suturing method gives you faster surgery, less swelling, shorter downtime and virtually scar-free. However, many had claimed that the suturing method has high breakage rate and ill define crease which may fade away along the years.

The good news is non-cutting method had been improvised or improved by many doctors around the globe along the years and the current method can be said to be very long lasting and some say permanent. In 2001, Dr. Katsuhiro Kure and Dr. Akihiro Minami had created an improvised method; DST (double suture and twist). They claim to have performed this technique on more than 1000 patients over 10 years with very good and long lasting outcome. In recent years, doctors of Taiwan also improvised the suturing method by using triple suture technique and claim had been performing it for 6-8 years with no complaint of breakage so far.

Facial Slimming with BTA

Tired of editing your own pictures before sharing it? Or do you always have to stand behind your friends to have a ‘smaller face’ in your pictures?

Some of us have spent a lot on multiple brands of ‘V-SHAPED Facial creams’, numerous ‘V-SHAPED Face bands’. Some have even undergone surgeries. All that hassle..... just for a slimmer looking face.

Ever wonder your wish may just come true with a few simple injections if BTA at your lower face?

Most of us have a condition called masseter muscle hypertrophy . This is caused usually by our daily habitual activities like – chewing gum or cuttlefish, bruxism, history of long term dental treatment and temporo-mandibular joint pain.

Masseter muscle hypertrophy in the long run makes our face bigger, squarer, masculine-like.....and sad to say, uglier. Hence we download photo editing apps in our phones, we apply creams, facial bands...yet it doesn’t go away, it only gets worse. Is there an end to this? Do we need to hide from the cameras?

Thankfully, there is always a solution. And the solution has always been there.
Type A botulinum toxin (BTA) was first reported for the treatment of masseter muscle hypertrophy in 1994.

Since then, multiple studies have shown and proved that that the use of BTA for contouring of the lower face can be established as a simple, safe, predictable, alternative facial contouring procedure without a prolonged recovery time.

So, no more creams, no more bands, no more painful joints....or dangerous surgeries. BTA not only work wonders on your upper face, it excellently shapes and slims your lower face too!!! Now, everyone can be Beautiful !
